The following application was successfully tested in our Custom Testing Area at igus GmbH in Cologne.

The UR3e in combination with the Mech-Mind NANO is able to recognise objects using the MechMind VIZ software and transport them using the pick and place method.

The integrated 3D camera recognises contours and is able to localise objects. These are sucked up by the suction cup and placed in the desired container.

The possible applications of this flexible process are diverse and offer potential in various areas.

Flexible robot use thanks to the 7th axis

The video shows the application of a 7th axis for Universal Robots at the Metalex trade fair in Thailand. The 7th axis from igus extends the action radius of Universal Robots by up to 6000 mm, allowing them to be used for many different applications. The 7th axis is ideal for pick and place applications as shown in this video. The linear axis can be used for applications with precision requirements of 0.3 mm, with a load of up to 55 kg and a max. speed of up to 0.6 m/s. Since the axis is mainly made of our tribologically optimized plastics, a long service life and a high cost saving for the linear axis can be realized.

The 7th axis from igus can be used individually and flexibly. In this application example, it is simulated how a collaborating robot picks up a package and places it on an assembly line for the next step. Due to the 7th axis, the robot has up to 4 times more working space than before and becomes much more flexible in the applications. The robot is tethered by a linear slide of the ZLW-20200 toothed belt axis, allowing it to move back and forth to pick up and place new packages. The axis impresses with a maximum speed of 0.3 m/s and offers a repeatability of +- 0.3 mm.

Easy expansion of the workspace for lightweight robots

This URCap shows how the loading and unloading of machine tools can be automated in combination with the Trulifter. A UR jointed-arm robot moves back and forth on a seventh axis in front of the two machines, picks out the workpieces and sorts them into the boxes. The UR5e and the Trulifter communicate via software, and the Trulifter then moves the crates away.

The UR5e is a collaborative 6-axis robot with a reach of 850 mm and a dead weight of 20.6 kilograms. The maximum payload that can be picked up is 5 kilograms. The Cobot can be equipped with various grippers, camera systems or even accessories such as a drylin seventh axis. It can be used in a wide variety of areas, from manufacturing to the laboratory.

This application illustrates how the workspace of a Universal Robots jointed-arm robot can be significantly expanded with a seventh axis from igus. The robot grips the ballpoint pen and then moves to the target position on the additional axis. There it places the ballpoint pen in the cup. In this way, monotonous pick and place tasks can be automated.
